Emotional Poetry!

Yesterday in class we looked at writing emotional poetry. Students drew a random emotion out of a bag and had to try and write a poem on that emotion. We used cues such as 'What would that emotion look like?', 'What would that emotion sound like?' and 'What would that emotion feel like?'.

The students wrote some AMAZING poetry. Have a look below and see if you can guess what emotion they were each writing about!

Story Cubes

This week for Writing in Room 8 we were introduced to Story cubes!
Story cubes are where you roll 3 dice and they land showing three different images. The task is that you then have to use your imagination and create a story based on those three pictures.

We saw lots of really creative, unique ideas in the classroom. Here is Mary-Janes awesome work!

Images I used for this story - Tower, Flower and Key.

One day a man named Jake thought of building a very high building, a few years past and his building was finished, He called it the long line tower, The long line tower was one of the world's biggest building. One day Jake went to go ask a builder to build him a custom made door, the door took for weeks because jake wanted it to be the best door anybody had ever seen. After the door was made Jake went to get his key measurements, the man the was measuring gave him the measurements and Jake walked down to the key maker and gave the man his key measurements.

A few days went by and Jake went back to the key maker and picked up his keys for the long line tower, Jake was so happy he could get his tower more upgrades and make his tower better, Jake was over joyed seeing his key, he put the key in the keyhole and opened up his tower, it had all the gib wood in it. About a 6 months later all the towers walls were painted and they looked amazing, a quarter of the tower was a hotel some was a restaurant, some of the tower was a arcade for kids and adults, Jake thought of making the back and front of the building a garden for crops and plants so Jake got a great gardener and the gardener made plan grass into a beautiful garden with crops and flowers, Jakes Long line tower was getting popular and popular.

About 7 months later Jake's long line tower was one of the best towers in the world, Jakes gardener came back to plant some more flower and crops, a few days later Jake got told he was now able to see his garden the gardener took him outside, Jake was as bouncy as a kangaroo Jake looked around and then he saw a big bunch of purple hibiscus flowers, Jake loved them because they where big bright and beautiful, and his tower stayed there for a long time.
THE END

Great work Mary-Jane!

Black bag similes

In class today room 8 had a writing lesson where they had to come up with similes describing what they felt when they put their hand into a mysterious black bag. Only Miss Morrison knew what was inside the bag and the students of room 8 had to put their hands in and use similes to describe what they felt. Here are some of the similes they came up with!

Our Marvellous Medicine

Lately in class, during milk time, we have been reading "Georges Marvellous Medicine" by Roald Dahl. As part of our creative writing, we decided to write our own 'Marvellous Medicine recipe!'. The only rule was that it had to be a recipe that would do something good!

Here are a couple of examples of some of the students work!

Iziah and Tanisslous' Ocean Inspired Legend

How a penguin was considered bird

“Let me tell you the legend of how a penguin was considered a bird.”
It all started when the man upstairs, started to create animals. He first created reptiles then
lions and then dogs and many, many more great species. He looked upon earth and said there is nothing in the beautiful blue sky. So he started to create an animal that could levitate off the ground. His finished product had a pointy beak that was the colour of the yellow light in the sky, it had a smaller body, compare to the rest, it had wings and it could fly, it was called a bird. God said “What a beautiful animal.” He soon created more and more and more until the blue sky was filled with these birds.

One day, God saw that the land of ice was only filled with seals. Form making all those birds he was still in the mode of making animals with wings. After about 1 year after the birds where flying about in the sky god decided to create something called a penguin. This creature had a beak but slightly bigger, this creature had a bigger body, feet, and wings. God released the penguin onto earth he named it Raj. God didn't see Raj as a bird he simply saw it as whole other animal.

Raj waddled along into the jungle where he saw lots of other birds soaring through the trees and sky. The other birds were fascinated when they saw this unusual creature. One bird said “Hey, look this one looks like a zombie!” All of the other birds made fun of Raj. One bird even said “Can he even fly?” Raj flapped his wings as fast as he could but he failed. All of the other birds laughed.

Raj was then determined to show the other birds that he could fly. He stayed up all night jumping from tree to tree, after jumping lots and lots of trees he gave up saying, “Forget it. I’m not a bird. I’m never going to able to fly.” He stomped off to the water.

He didn’t know what was happening but he was attracted to the water and the ice. He jumped in and flew under the water towards the cold areas, after about 1 hour of flying through the water he finally he found how he could fly, in the water! He ran back to where the birds lived and announced that he could fly, but they just stared at him for a moment...then laughed and flew into the air showing off their talents and then minding their business. Raj was disappointed.

Walking around the birds’ home he saw a letter.  It said Flying competition! Only for birds that can fly. He took a deep breath and signed his name to enter. Raj kept practicing some life or death tricks but he couldn’t master his best one.

The competition was one all the birds that were in the competition were in a line waiting for there time to show of, Raj was third. When it was Raj’s turn, he ran as fast as he could and jumped into the water. The champions from last year’s competition were the judges.  They were all impressed at this penguins talents he perform the most dangerous (it was only dangerous to the bird not to the penguins).

After when all the birds had all performed the judges had to pick the best act and crown them as flying champion for 1289. “Raj!” All the judges voted Raj, he sank into a glorious feeling and stood proudly as he was being praised with love from everyone.

That is how a penguin was considered a bird because he could fly...but in the water.

Faith Describes Her Beautiful Place

Far beyond the sea of the world is my beautiful place, So if you want to know more about my beautiful place then read through these magical paragraphs carefully.

It was one bright Saturday morning, and as I took a look outside my bedroom window I could see the flow of sand drifting through the cute baby's little fingers, little girls dressed in stunning island costumes, as if they were going to dance at a show and old people walking velvetly with their canes and walking sticks.

I heard my mum calling me from a far distance telling me to get dressed. I took one step outside our house door and I could hear the soft voices of old people talking to each other, the happy laughter of the little ones and mostly, the amazing sound of my grandfather and his 6 brothers strumming the guitar, ukelele and the beat of the island drums playing from the heart. It felt like I was at a festival dancing to the beat of the music with my hula skirt, coco nut shells and a manea (pretty or beautiful) tiare (fragipani type of a pretty flower) in my ear. I could hear the strong mighty voice of my family cheering for me with lots pride.

Then suddenly something had caught the tip of my nose so, I follow the tracks of that smell and it led me to Nana's mammoth house which was down the road and she was cooking my favourite... poke (traditional banana or cabbon bread pudding).

When I entered Nana’s house I felt the smoothness of her tall bright green walls. She saw me with happiness as if she had won the lotto so I gave her a big hug and when I did it felt like a big blanket full of love had reached over me. I felt like a really special person who was loved.

The poke was now ready and when I took spoon full of poke it was as if I was in Heaven. It tasted so wonderfully cooked I wanted to have more. But it was now time for me to go, so I touched Nana’s pretty young face once more and left her with all my love.

Have you guessed what my beautiful place was? Well anyway it was Rarotonga which is one of the 15 islands in the country Cook Islands. This is my beautiful place and I will aways treasure my special time that I had there in my heart, soul and mind.

Mavis Describes Her Beautiful Place

Far beyond the exhausted sun... a paradise comes alive! The sun hulas across the island to capture the essence of paradise.

Mysterious, rare creatures dart around the island desperately, looking for anything crunchy to munch on. Water trickles down the water fall, like tears collapsing onto a pillow of candy floss. Light winds swoop the leaves off their feet and dance under the banana-shaped sun.

An immense flavour oozes between my teeth tempting me to dream. A mountain of divine raspberry fruit, melts blissfully in my mouth. What a sweet taste! Tears of white chocolate dive down dramatically from the blank blue sky shimmering like diamonds under the oven-like sun . Beautiful blue candy floss bounces in between brazillian butterflies causing them to splutter in surprise.

An exotic, fragrant smell of banana leaves fizz under my nose like fireworks. Sea water pushes small parcels of their strong smell into the weak air. The smell of a Samoan umu flutters across the island. Tongan meals being prepared by gum gum bears are already nearly running out. The smell of a Maori hangi hangs above my head making me lick my lips.

My eyes flutter with excitement as coconuts fall down like crazy. My veins giggle with excitement. Frosty air dances like a bunch of hooligans. Velvet pieces of cake served into my hands by grape-coloured ice creams.

White polar bears sing goodnight. Day throws in night as if controlled by a flick of a switch.Fire cackles aways into the night.

Under the moon light glow, lays my paradise...sound asleep.
