Education outside the classroom!

This week for Room 6, 7 and 8 we had EOTC!

Everyday there were set activities for us to participate in and learn from.
The week focused around the key competencies: Managing self and relating to others.

From Monday to Friday, students were interacting with each other, working together and having fun!

Here are some of Room 8's students reflections:

Here is a collection of photos and videos from the week - we had an amazing time - thank you to everyone involved!

#MannequinChallenge for Room 8!

For all of those out there who are frequently visiting social media, you will be familiar with the current 'Mannequin Challenge' which is ruling the internet!

With the music 'black beatles' - the challenge is to look like a mannequin while someone with a camera moves around the group.

Room 6 blogged their attempt yesterday and it looked awesome!
(Check it out on this link!)

We saw it this morning and decided to accept their challenge and take it up a level.

Here is 'A day in Room 8 - Mannequin Challenge!'

FLiP from PwC

For the past two weeks, the year 5 & 6 students of Tamaki Primary school have been lucky to take part in a Financial Literacy programme run by PwC.

Room 8 had the awesome coaches Caroline and Laura come and teach us for 4 modules.

In our first session we covered 'saving money' and 'being trustworthy'. We looked at how to save, why we should save and how we can be trustworthy with our money and other peoples. We also discussed who we should trust with our belongings and money.

Leilani's summary from session 1

Today we had visitors named Laura and Caroline come to our classroom and talk to us about how to we can save money and how to be trustworthy with money. I have learnt that people need to spend money wisely and don't get expensive things if you can't afford it. I also learnt if you can save money you should hide your money somewhere so that people to take it. To be trustworthy with money you should, pay back the money that you borrowed from your friend. The most important thing I learnt is that you should try your best at saving your money otherwise in the future when you are older you can buy whatever you want but only if you have the money to buy it.

- Cerenity's summary from session 1.

Tevita's summary from session 1

During our second session we looked what 'Identity theft' is and how we can avoid it! We also discussed how to minimise risks with things like having insurance, alarms and being sensible with our belongings!

Here are some photos from our second session:

Today we learnt about insurance.
It is a way of fixing a problem when something is broken of your life and they  do that because you can pay a few dollars of money every month and help is on the way.
And that is why I was looking forward to insurance during this day with PWC.
- Edith's summary from session 2

The thing that I liked about PWC is that they remind us like
what we do when something is wrong then they tell you what
to do and I learned that your birth certificate, passport and your
driver licence are given by the government.
- Soane's summary from session 2.

We have had an awesome few sessions and we want to say a huge thank you to Laura and Caroline (and the PwC team) for coming in to teach us! We are going to try and take what we have learnt out into our communities.

Manaiakalani Film festival

This year for the Manaiakalani Film Festival - Room 8 worked together to create a film about safe hygiene!

The process took a long time, from brainstorming to planning, to filming and then editing! The best part about the whole thing was that our clever Room 8 students did it all!

We started by brainstorming what topic we wanted to film on - since we had just finished studying "safety starts with me" - the students decided they wanted to teach others how to have safe hygiene.

As a class, we then all picked our roles. Some students were script writers, others were editors, actors, directors and Miss Morrison was the person behind the camera!

The script writers decided they wanted to make safe hygiene something that other school students would want to participate in - that is where the idea of the 'dab' came in.

Room 8 worked really hard to put this altogether and we are very proud of it. We hope you enjoy our film - leave us a comment with some feedback and let us know if you will dab when you sneeze!

Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night learning!

This week as part of our reading and writing, we have been learning all about 'Guy Fawkes'!

Students had the opportunity to read all about 'Bonfire night' and how it became an annual celebration.
We learnt about who Guy Fawkes was and what his role was in the Gunpowder plot! We also had an art session where we designed our own fireworks - this related to our Inquiry topic of Celebrations as we tried to design fireworks that would be 'let off' on a day that celebrated us!

Here is some of the work the students have done.

Emotional Poetry!

Yesterday in class we looked at writing emotional poetry. Students drew a random emotion out of a bag and had to try and write a poem on that emotion. We used cues such as 'What would that emotion look like?', 'What would that emotion sound like?' and 'What would that emotion feel like?'.

The students wrote some AMAZING poetry. Have a look below and see if you can guess what emotion they were each writing about!

Tuakana Teina Halloween!

On Monday we celebrated Halloween with our buddy class Room 1!

At Midday we joined classes in the art room and made three different types of crafts that related to Halloween. It was a great opportunity for our Room 8 students to show their leadership, manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and ako skills! In the afternoon we made Halloween masks in Room 1.

Here are some photos from the day.
